President Kikwete sends a message on Qatar's National Day

H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania has sent a congratulatory message to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, on the occasion of the Anniversary of the Qatar National Day of the founder of the state of Qatar Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani.

The message reads as follows:

“His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,

Emir of the state of Qatar,

DOHA,

Your Highness,

On behalf of the Government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, and indeed on my own behalf, I would like to sincerely convey my warm congratulations to you, Your Highness and through you, to the Government and the people of Qatar on this significant celebration of the Anniversary of the State of Qatar National Day.

The state of Qatar and the United Republic of Tanzania have enjoyed cordial bilateral relations over the years. As you commemorate this joyous occasion of your country’s independence, I wish to take this opportunity to reiterate my Government’s desire and commitment to further enhance the traditional bond of friendship and cooperation existing between our two countries for our mutual benefits.

Your grief is Tanzania's: Kikwete

South Africa's grief following the death of former president Nelson Mandela was shared by Tanzania, President Jakaya Kikwete said on Sunday.

Speaking at Mandela's funeral in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, Kikwete said Mandela and Tanzania's first president Julius Nyerere built the foundation upon which the two countries' close relationship was based.

"That is why your sadness, grief and sorrow are ours as well. That is why we also join you in celebrating the life of this great man," Kikwete said. "He has left behind a vibrant democracy. A nation where nobody is denied their basic rights because of the colour of their skin. A nation where blacks can also prosper, where in the past they were condemned to live in squalor, and as second class citizens in their own country."

When Mandela visited Dar es Salaam after his release from prison, he was greeted by the biggest crowds ever to meet a foreign dignitary, even though it was raining at the time. "This record has not been broken," said Kikwete.

He recited the close historical links between Tanzania and the ANC, which the apartheid government had banned at the time, severely restricting the movement of members in and beyond South Africa.

Nyerere, after meeting Mandela when he first visited the country in 1962 as he was gathering support for the ANC's armed struggle against apartheid, allowed Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) cadres to stay and train in the country. "Beyond availing places to live and train, he (Nyerere) offered Tanzania's own moral and material support," said Kikwete.

Mandela's charisma was unmatched in modern times and it was no accident that South Africa and Tanzania enjoyed excellent bilateral relations

"Beside that, Tanzania was generous enough to give cadres of the liberation movement travel documents, passports... and when necessary, some of them assumed Tanzanian names." When Mandela came to Tanzania, he had no passport and intended going to first Accra in Ghana, then Lagos in Nigeria, and then Addis Abba in Ethiopia.

"He was given a Tanzanian travel document. It facilitated his movement and I know a number of you here used Tanzanian travel documents. I don't know if Thabo Mbeki returned his," Kikwete said, which induced laughter. "The ANC found a new home in Tanzania from where it operated, organised, spearheaded, and prosecuted the struggle."

When Madiba left for Accra, he left behind his boots in the home of the family where he stayed in the hope he could pick them up on the way back. Shortly after arriving back in South Africa he was imprisoned. "In 1995, when Mandela was president, the pair of boots was handed back to him."

Kikwete said Mandela's charisma was unmatched in modern times and it was no accident that South Africa and Tanzania enjoyed excellent bilateral relations, given the common history uniting the two countries.

A Freedom fighter, prisoner, moral compass and South Africa's symbol of the struggle against racial oppression.  That was Nelson Mandela, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead his country out of decades of apartheid.  He died on December 5, 2013 at age 95.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Winner of the 2013 Public Sector Partner of the Year

Mr. John M. Haule, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation receives the Public Sector Partner of the Year 2013 Award on behalf of the Ministry from Mr. Ali Mufuruki, Chairman of the CEO Roundtable.  The special ceremony took place last Friday 6 December, 2013 at the CEO Roundtable event held at the Hyatt Regency (Kilimanjaro) Hotel in Dar es Salaam. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to serve as the 'link' for various institutions in the country which has birthed many business and investment opportunities in the country.  Such opportunities resulted in the recent businessmen roundtables that connected local businessmen and others around the globe, exchanging ideas, expertise and experiences in various sectors.    

Permanent Secretary John M. Haule shows the Award he had just received on behalf of the Ministry, which is a recognition of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' contribution to the promotion of the private sectors.

This year, Tanzania hosted notable world leaders that included the State Visits by the Chinese President Xi Jinping, who had launched the China's Foreign Policy for Africa, and the U.S. President Barack Obama, who had launched the Power Africa Initiative.  

Apart from that, there were other significant visits by Thai Premier Yingluck Shinawatra, the visit which opened new business ventures with Tanzania, the two Joint Permanent Commissions (JPC) between Tanzania and Oman, and between Tanzania and India for this year 2013.  Further, Tanzania had also hosted the 2013 Global Smart Partnership Dialogue in late June 2013, which had gathered businessmen and world leaders from around the globe in Dar es Salaam.   

These visits and among others, have opened more doors for businesses and investment opportunities that derive from China, the United States, Denmark, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries around the world.
