MINISTER MAHIGA’S DAY VISIT TO ROMANIA; SIGNS AN MOU FOR BILATERAL CONSULTATIONS
PRESS RELEASE
Tanzania’s foreign minister Hon. Dr. Augustine Mahiga, and his Romanian counterpart Hon. Teodor Melescanu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, redefining bilateral relations that exist between Tanzania and Romania.
The two leaders held extensive talks prior to the signing ceremony which was held at Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest in front of members of the press. The timely signing came at a time when the two parties are working to establish strong economic ties, with different nations around the world.
The signed MoU between the two countries’ Foreign Ministries provides a platform to hold regular strategic consultations on political, economic, commercial, scientific, technical and cultural aspects of bilateral relations, regional and international matters.
The platform is envisaged to further develop and strengthen friendly relations while increase mutual understanding and cooperation between Tanzania and Romania.
“During the liberation struggle of Africa, many Tanzanian students came to Romania to study medicine and pharmaceutical. With the signing of this MoU, now Romania and Tanzania are strategic partners. We anticipate diversification in the area of training and capacity building to include new sectors such as agronomy for Tanzanian students” Hon. Mahiga remarked.
Hon. Melescanu explained that ever since the new Government of Romania came into leadership one year ago, the focus has been to re establish relations and partnerships with countries outside Europe.
“But Tanzania and Romania have been friends for the longest time, and we witnessed many of your colleagues receiving education in Romania. The number kept decreasing year after year due to the closing of our embassy in the 90’s. I believe now things will be better, for our people” announced Foreign Minister Melescanu.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 5th May 1964. The relations were very active until 18th November, 1999, when the government of Romania closed its embassy in Dar es Salaam, due to financial difficulties. The relations were mainly based on education particularly scholarship to Tanzania students.
The platform for political discussions will provide an opportunity to discuss both priority issues, including migration issues, business opportunities, investments, various development projects, capacity building and tourism promotion.
Hon. Mahiga and his delegation, made a one-day visit to Bucharest on their way back to Tanzania after concluding another working visit in the region. Permanent Secretary of Romania Foreign Ministry is also expected to visit Tanzania as a follow up of this signed MoU within the coming month.

African envoys plug business on the continent
Africa is changing and Korea should get on board, ambassadors of African nations said at a forum in Seoul on Wednesday to celebrate Africa Day.
“Currently, six of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies are in Africa,” said Albino Malungo, ambassador of Angola and dean of the African Group of Ambassadors. “The African train has already left the station. The message to our Korean business partners is that Africa is the new global growth pole and the next market.”
The Korea-Africa Foundation, African Diplomatic Corps in Korea and Federation of Korean Industries hosted the Africa Business Seminar at the FKI Tower in western Seoul, on Wednesday. Organizers highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area, which includes 44 countries and intends to pool together African goods and services into a single market with free movement of people and investment.
The free trade area “is aware that there are other economic communities in the regions where it will [have] impact,” said Rwandan Ambassador Emma-Francoise Isumbingabo, who chaired the preparation committee for this year’s Africa Day celebration in Korea. “[The free trade area] will work closely with existing communities, aligning itself with their goals and objectives, and ensuring that cooperation with foreign and outside investment in the African market is made easy and approachable.”
Investors noted budding Korean interest in the African market.
“Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has what’s called the Country Partnership Strategy for each recipient country of its funds,” said Jun Woo-hyung, director of trade information at the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, “which in Africa are Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Uganda, Rwanda, Senegal and Tanzania. There is budding interest in the African market here. Recall that the African Development Bank held its annual meeting in Busan this past May.”
Some ambassadors said Korean companies can do more in Africa.
“We all think there is a huge potential that is underutilized,” said Egyptian Ambassador Hazem Fahmy. “Korea is leading in high technology and the fourth industrial revolution, and I think it could make huge profits by investing in Africa in these areas.”
Africa Day is celebrated on May 25 annually and commemorates the foundation of the Organization of African Unity in 1963. In addition to the business forum, embassies of African nations hosted a food and culture fair in central Seoul’s Cheonggye Plaza.
There was injera (sourdough flatbread) made with teff flour; baked goods from the Algerian embassy, including semolina-stuffed makrout and date-filled kaak cookies; figurines from Ghana in traditional dress; handwoven baskets from Sudan and Rwanda; and stone animals from Tanzania.
“Before I knew it, Korea has become my home,” said Audrey Aduol, a 28-year-old Kenyan studying at Seoul National University, who was helping out at the Kenyan booth. “The other time I went home, I felt like a guest in my own country. It’s bittersweet how that happens.”

TAARIFA KWA
VYOMBO VYA HABARI
WAZIRI MAHIGA AHITIMISHA ZIARA YAKE NCHINI NORWAY
ASISITIZA UWEKEZAJI WENYE TIJA
Waziri wa
Mambo ya Nje na Ushirikiano wa Afrika Mashariki, Mhe. Dkt. Augustine Mahiga
Dkt. Wilbroad Slaa ambaye anatarajiwa
kukabidhi hati zake za utambulisho tarehe

MINISTER MAHIGA COMMENDS RELATIONS BETWEEN TANZANIA AND NORWAY
PRESS
RELEASE
MINISTER MAHIGA SPEAKS ABOUT FIVE DECADE-LONG
THRIVING RELATIONS BETWEEN TANZANIA AND NORWAY
Tanzania Foreign Minister Hon. Dr.
Augustine Mahiga has told his Norwegian counterpart Hon. Ine Eriksen Soreide
today that the strength behind flourishing Tanzania-Norway bilateral relations
has been the distinctive cooperation and strategic assistance that exist for
over five decades now between these two traditional partners. The two leaders
held talks at the Government Guest House to kick start the first-ever political
and diplomatic consultations meeting aimed at strengthening their relations.
Minister Mahiga who is in Oslo for a
three-day working visit told the Norwegian delegation that besides diplomatic
relations that Tanzania enjoys, the Norwegian government has been in the
forefront in providing substantial amount of development assistance to Tanzania
with a plus, throughout all the leadership phases in the country.
“Our bilateral relations with you, our
friends, date back before the independence of Tanganyika whereby Norwegian
teachers, doctors, nurses and engineers, came to the country to provide social
services to the people of Tanzania particularly in rural areas” Hon. Mahiga
said. This is a testimony that the two countries have long-standing relations,
adding that “shortly after independence in 1960’s and 1970’s the Norwegian and
Tanzanian governments participated in joint Nordic Projects like the Kibaha
Education Centre and the Uyole Agricultural Research Centre, in line with
policies and principles of an independent Tanganyika. This demonstrates that Norwegian
cooperation is strategically aligned with our country’s vision” Minister Mahiga
complemented.
Responding to this, Hon. Ine Eriksen
Soreide said that her government has over the years enjoyed the relations with
Tanzania and as a Foreign Minister; she will strive to continue this trend.
Norwegian government has selected Tanzania to be among its recipients of
development assistance and her duty is to make sure that this is implemented
swiftly.
“Norway and Tanzania see eye to eye in
many global issues of concern such as global peace, improving multilateral
trading system, international order as well as world efforts in prevention of
conflicts. In all this we view Tanzania as a key and credible player in the
African region and our partner in development” Hon. Soreide emphasized. She
added that she looks forward to continue with the commenced political
consultations annually, for mutual benefits in those issues. Hon. Mahiga assured Minister Soreide that
Tanzania will reciprocate hosting the consultations next year, which will be
held in Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania.
Under the political and diplomatic
consultations framework, Hon. Mahiga and
his delegation also held talks with the Norwegian Development Minister Hon.
Nikolai Astrup at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In their consultations,
Minister Mahiga reiterated Norwegian strategic assistance for development to
Tanzania which is key for economic growth and alleviation of poverty.
“Given the historical ties between us, your
government has always provided support to projects that are much beneficial in
rural areas example rural electrification. Norway’s support to energy sector is
key given the role of the sector in supporting our economic growth”, said Amb.
Mahiga.
Other areas in Tanzania that receive
Norwegian assistance are; management of public recourses as well as tax
collection. The Government of Norway through the assistance programs of Oil for
Development and Tax for Development contribute to build capacity of Tanzania’s
institutions responsible management of resources, management of public revenues
and environment protection.
The maiden Political and Diplomatic
Consultations comes as a result of the MoU signed in 2017 in Dar es Salaam
between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania and Norway, which enable
the two ministries to discuss issues of mutual concern in order to enhance
further bilateral ties. Next round of consultations of this nature are
envisaged to take place next year in Dodoma, Tanzania.

VYA HABARI
ZIARA YA WAZIRI
MAHIGA NCHINI NORWAY
mbili yaani win win situation”alisisitiza Dkt. Mahiga.
