President Kikwete arrives in Addis Ababa for the AU Summit

H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the President of the united Republc of Tanzani arrived today in Addis Ababa Ethiopia to attend the 19th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government Summit.

This Morning, the President is expecting to attend the Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting at the level of Heads of State and Government at the Plenary Hall of the AU Conference Center (Old Building).Tanzania is a member of the AU's Peace and Security Council.

The meeting will consider the following items:

- Report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the situation in Mali
- Report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the follow-up to the PSC Communiqué of 24 April 2012 on the situation between Sudan and South Sudan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with its institutions - the Centre for Foreign Relations (CFR), the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM-Tanzania) and the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), today finished its exhibition show held from June 28 through July 8, 2012 at Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere (Sabasaba) Fair Ground, Kilwa Road in Dar es Salaam.

Our Ministry was visited by people of all ages that include students, teachers, business owners, homemakers, entrepreneurs and many more.   This exhibition, like others, was yet another opportunity for the Ministry to reach out to the general public and get firsthand opinions on how well informed the public is about its policies; and what opinions, recommendations or questions the general public have about the Ministry. 

Indeed, it was an opportunity to spread public diplomacy; enhancing the Ministry’s image, visibility and objectives by reaching out to people of all ages and nationalities.   For the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), for instance, it was an opportunity to promote business tourism services with goals to enhance national, social and economic development for the country.  On the other hand, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM-Tanzania) educated the public about how the peer review mechanism works in monitoring the progress of governance and good practices in four thematic areas of democracy/political governance, economic governance, corporate governance and socio-economic governance.  Lastly, for the Centre of Foreign Relations, the goal was not only to educate the public about what CFR does, but also to encourage prospective students to apply before the deadline of July 28, 2012 for those interested in taking Diploma or Postgraduate degree.

The Sabasaba exhibition marked the 36^th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (36^th DITF) where exhibitors uses it as a focal point to showcase their goods, services and ideas to the enthusiastic visitors generated locally and around the world.  The Fair acts as one-stop centre for reaching countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo, and other countries around the world. 

In addition, this year’s DITF concurrently ran with the 1^st Brands of China African Showcase (Chinese Commodities Trade Fair) in the same venue, making it the first event of its kind in Africa.  In essence, exhibitions also serve as an exposure to learn from other countries, creating business relations and partnership connection.

Updates on the visit of South Africa's Deputy President

The Tanzanian Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal has commended the South Africa's OR Tambo Education tour programme which is aimed at enabling the country's youngsters to explore their liberation struggle heritage routes in Tanzania.

Speaking to the visiting Deputy President of South Africa, H.E Kgalema Motlanthe, the Tanzanian Vice President commended South Africa for the initiatives which he said would enable most of the new generation youngsters to keep up the spirit of what happened during the South Africa's freedom struggle era.

"it is good to see youngsters exploring their historical routes and what happened in the past. We are here partly because of our good historical connection" the Vice President told his counterpart.

Earlier, the South African Deputy President who arrived in Tanzania for the two-day working visit, told the Tanzanian Vice President that his arrival yesterday came along with the visit of 60 young people from various parts of South Africa retracing the country's liberation heritage routes in Tanzania.

For the last three years, SOMAFCO Trust of South Africa has been organising a number of education competitions inSouth Africa after which, winners of the competition get an opportunity to visit Tanzania, retracing their liberation heritage route through the OR Tambo Education Tour.

The South Africa Deputy President said he is looking forward to an opportunity to make a longer visit to Tanzania and visit Serengeti National park so to see famous wildlife migration.

The Tanzanian Vice President also called for a more enhanced bilateral ties between the two countries and invited more South African companies to invest in various investment opportunities available in Tanzania.

The two leaders emphasized the need to preserve the liberation heritage of our two countries and the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa and the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM). The existing collaboration should be enhanced through exchange of visits at party to party and government to government levels. As ANC celebrates 100 years of its existance, this year also marks 20 years since Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO) in Morogoro was handed over to the government of Tanzania.

While in Tanzania, among other things, the visiting Deputy President will pay a courtesy call on the Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete before flying to Morogoro to visit Vuyisile Mini-furniture Factory, Luthuli Primary School and make a guided tour to ANC-Hollande Solidarity Hospital ANC's liberation struggle heritage sites.

The visiting Deputy Presdent is expected to return tomorrow.

South Africa's Deputy President has arrived in Dar today

H.E Kgalema Motlanthe, the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa arrived this noon for a two-day working visit to the United Republic of Tanzania.

While in Tanzania, among other things, the visiting Deputy President will pay a courtesy call on the Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete before holding talks with his counterpart, Dr. mohamed Bilal.

On the second leg of his tour, the visiting Deputy President will also visit a farm, Vuyisile Mini-furniture Factory,Luthuli Primary School and make a guided tour to ANC-Hollande Solidarity Hospital before making a visit to ANC's former freedom fighter's camps at Solomon Mahlangu in Morogoro.

The visit is taking place along with OR Tambo Education Tour organsed by. SOMAFCO Trust of South Africa. SOMAFCO Trust organises edicational competitions within South Africa, whose winner gets to visit Tanzania retracing the Liberation heritage route. They have been organising this event for the kast three years.

About 60 South African Young people have are part of the Visiting Deputy President to retracing the South Africa's Liberation Heritage Route in Tanzania through the SOMAFCO initiative.

The Co-ordinator of the Project is Mr Ntokozo, who grew up a child in Mazimbu during the liberation struggle in Morogoro.

Bernard Kamilius Membe (Mb),Waziri wa Mambo ya Nje na Ushirikiano wa Kimataifa amekutana na Waandishi wa Habari pamoja na Mabalozi wa Nchi za Umoja wa Ulaya na Marekani hapa nchini kwa lengo la kutoa msimamo wa Serikali ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania kuhusu kuwepo kwa uvumi kwamba Meli za Iran zimesajiliwa na kupeperusha bendera ya Tanzania kama ilivyotangazwa katika vyombo vya habari ndani na nje ya nchi.

Katika mazungumzo yake na Waandishi wa Habari na baadaye Mabalozi, Mhe. Waziri alieleza kwamba Serikali ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania ilipata taarifa kuhusu meli za Iran kusajiliwa na kupeperusha bendera ya Tanzania kupitia kwenye vyombo vya habari.

Alisema Serikali ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar ilichukua hatua ya kuitaka Mamlaka ya Usafiri wa Baharini ya Zanzibar – Zanzibar Marine Authority (ZMA) ambayo kwa Sheria Na. 3 ya mwaka 2009 ina mamlaka ya kusajili meli za Kimataifa kuchuguza tuhuma hizo na kutoa taarifa.

Aidha, aliwatanabaisha Waandishi na Mabalozi kwamba Mamlaka ya Usafiri wa Baharini Zanzibar ilichukua hatua za kumtaka Wakala wake wa kusajili meli, Kampuni ya PHILTEX yenye makao yake makuu Dubai, Falme za Kiarabu (UAE) kutoa taarifa kama kati ya meli 399 zilizosajiliwa kuna meli za Iran.

Nayo Kampuni ya PHILTEX ilitoa taarifa kuwa kati ya meli zilizosajiliwa hakuna meli hata moja ya Iran. Hata hivyo, waliongeza kuwa meli zilizosajiliwa hivi karibuni zilikuwa na usajili wa Cyprus na Malta.

Aidha, Wizara ya Mambo ya Nje na Ushirikiano wa Kimataifa ilimwita Balozi wa Iran nchini ili kujua kama kuna ukweli kuwa baadhi ya meli zilizosajiliwa ni za Iran. Balozi alikataa kabisa kuwa hakuna meli za Iran zilizosajiliwa Zanzibar na zinazopeperusha bendera ya Tanzania.

Taarifa hizi kutoka kwenye vyombo vya habari, Kampuni ya PHILTEX na Ubalozi wa Iran nchini zimepelekea Serikali ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania kufanya uchunguzi wa kina ili kuthibitisha kama kweli kuna meli za Iran zilizosajiliwa Zanzibar na zinazopeperusha bendera ya Tanzania.

Ili kupata ukweli wa tuhuma hizo, Serikali ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania imeomba nchi za Umoja wa Ulaya na Marekani kusaidia katika uchunguzi. Mhe. Waziri, aliwakabidhi Barua za Kibalozi kuwasilisha rasmi ombi hilo.

Mhe. Waziri Membe aliwahidi waandishi wa Habari na Mabalozi hao kwamba kuwa baada ya uchunguzi kukamilika na ukweli kubainika, serikali ya Jamhuri ya Muungano itachukuwa hatua za haraka ikiwemo kufuta usajili wa meli zote zitakazogundulika kuwa ni za Iran.

Tanzania: Plans Underway to Woo Diaspora to Invest

Dodoma — THE government will continue to encourage direct investment from Tanzanians in the Diaspora as opposed to subsistence support.

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mahadhi Juma Maalim told the National Assembly here on Wednesday that the need to engage Tanzanians in Diaspora was cross cutting, saying the ministry's task was to facilitate the engagement.

He said the ministry has formed a task force of stakeholders, which involves members from his ministry, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Planning Commission, Public Service Management and National Statistics Bureau, which will be in charge of monitoring and coordinating engagement with Tanzanians in the Diaspora.

He said knowledge and skills of the Diaspora is an additional source of engagement for the country to tap in strengthening the economy.However, he said the country has no specific data of the number of Tanzanians in Diaspora but said it is believed that the number has slightly exceeded 2,000,000, living and working in different countries in the world.

Mr Maalim further said that his ministry in collaboration with the World Bank is in the process of coordinating strategies to reach every Tanzanian in the Diaspora in a bid to get their exact number. The deputy minister was responding to a question by Vicky Kamata (Special Seats - CCM), who wanted to know the number of Tanzanians in Diaspora.

In her supplementary question, Martha Mlata (Special Seats - CCM), also demanded to know why the Diaspora were not encouraged to invest at home. She wanted a special window opened, to address the role of the Diaspora community in shaping the future of Tanzania.

Responding, Mr Maalim insisted the government's commitment in galvanising the Tanzanian Diaspora of all generations in harnessing their skills, knowledge and investment in the continued economic development of the country.

Tanzanians in the Diaspora have been channelling funds back home in various informal methods which authorities can hardly monitor. Such methods include sending money through relatives, buying luxurious goods such as automobiles, laptops, cameras and mobile phones among others, which are sent home and exchanged for money.
