Hon. Membe meets Consul General of India to Zanzibar

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Hon. Bernard K. Membe (MP), today met with Consul General of India to Zanzibar, Mr. Pawan Kumar in his office at the Ministry in Dar es Salaam.
Mr. Kumar paid a courtesy visit to the Minister and discussed successful areas of cooperation between Zanzibar and India in particular, solar energy project.
During their discussion, the Consul General said his Government sponsored six women from Zanzibar and provided practical training in solar power equipment installation in India for six months.
He said that since their return back to Zanzibar, the women have managed to connect electricity to 100 villages.
Mr. Kumar also highlighted new similar solar project his Government has earmarked to embark in Matemwe Village, in the Northern part of Unguja.
“We are working on setting up training program at the doorstep in Zanzibar instead of training technician all the way to India,” said the Consul General.
On his part, Hon. Membe welcomed and congratulated the Consul General, in particular for his Government’s assistance to Zanzibar in solar energy project.
“We have had rich traditional history with India in sectors such as health, information and communication technology,” said Hon. Membe.
Hon. Membe said that he was happy that the solar energy project has taken its course in Zanzibar, serving hundreds of households in the rural areas.
He further hoped that India’s cooperation through solar energy projects will continue to blossom in both parts of the Union.
