Applications from suitably qualified female and male candidates are equally welcome. The statutory retirement age after 1 January 2014 is 65. For external applicants, only those who are expected to complete the term of appointment will normally be considered. 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Under the supervision of the Director, LCP, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Edit and/or copy-edit a variety of WMO publications, ranging from general to very technical, relying on the WMO English Style Guide and guidance from senior colleagues;

(b) Use various publishing software and platforms in the editorial process in order to prepare efficiently the publications for downstream processing and publishing;

(c) Provide advice to external collaborators on the WMO editorial policy and quality standards;

(d) Participate in the development of editorial policies; advise other members of the Secretariat on English editorial matters; counsel and assist external translators and editors on relevant WMO procedures, in consultation with senior colleagues and/or technical experts;

(e) During WMO conferences and meetings, act as report writer, when required;

(f) Assist in terminology work and other language-related projects;

(g) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS 
Education 
University degree or equivalent in languages, editing, translation or a technical field closely related to the work of WMO. Successful certification of completion from the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for English-language Copy Preparers, Proofreaders, Production Editors, or the UN Language Competitive Examination for English Editors or the UN Language Competitive Examination for English Translators/Précis-writers.
 
Experience 
Five years of relevant experience in editing highly scientific material in an international organization, of which two years in a United Nations system. Experience acquired in a governmental or a large-scale private company is acceptable provided that it is coupled with the experience in an international organization. Familiarity with the preparation of reports and documents for international conferences and meetings. Knowledge of meteorology, hydrology or related disciplines would be an advantage.
 
Other requirements 
Professional command of publishing software and platforms for editing. Ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadlines while maintaining high levels of output and required standards of quality. Understanding of the overall purpose of published material and of copy-editing and editing responsibilities. Ability to work in a multicultural environment as a team member. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Good health permitting travel to any area of the world.
 
Languages 
English as the principal language essential. Excellent knowledge of French or one of the other official languages. Working knowledge of an additional official language of the WMO Secretariat would be an advantage.
 

(Note: the working languages of the WMO Secretariat are English and French. The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
The Secretary-General may appoint a candidate at a grade below the advertised grade of the post, with the possibility of promotion to that grade within three years of appointment, subject to satisfactory appraisal of performance.
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY, ALLOWANCES AND OTHER BENEFITS
Annual net base salary on initial appointment is:
US$ 60813 for staff members with dependants
US$ 56766 for staff members without dependants
Annual post adjustment on initial salary is:
US$ 53333 for staff members with dependants
US$ 49783 for staff members without dependants
This post adjustment, which is subject to change without notice, is paid in addition to the net base salary.
